Faculty Workload Application
I-ADVANCE has adapted promising practices and resources developed by the University of Maryland ADVANCE Faculty Workload and Rewards Project (NSF #1463898) to create the Faculty Workload application (FWA) for better transparency and visibility and acknowledgment of unrecognized or under-recognized work. Built in collaboration with Engineering IT, the FWA tool is designed for centralized, dynamic recordkeeping of teaching and service contributions by faculty over time and across units (department, college, and campus). Since the Faculty Workload application is a web-based platform among a suite of Engineering Portal Framework applications, eventually other units may be able to subscribe to the application after launch.
ADVANCE Partner units have agreed to use and implement the FWA to enhance accountability structures that support equity in faculty work domains. Research shows that labor in various categories is unevenly distributed among faculty in university environments (O’Meara, Culpepper, Misra, and Jaeger, 2022). The Faculty Workload application will be a tool for obtaining a more comprehensive picture of faculty members’ contributions, particularly in teaching and service, both within their academic units and beyond to the whole campus.
